As you enter a New Year, with new goals that may very well take you outside your comfort zone, you may experience fear.
How Do You Perceive Fear?
Fear is natural. It happens to all of us, especially when we step to the edge of our comfort zone. It alerts us as we step out on the edge of our comfort zone. It tells us that we’re about to experience, create, and accomplish something bigger than we ever have before. Fear can be a really important ally for you. It all depends on how you perceive fear.
When you look at the physiological effects of fear, it’s almost identical to excitement. The increased heart rate, butterflies (pit) in your stomach, and that feeling of overall uneasiness that you feel. This can be perceived as excitement or fear.
Even if you perceive fear as fear, it’s okay. Just feel it. Fear keeps you alert, brings you to the present, and helps your senses stay tuned to what’s coming. What’s coming doesn’t mean it’s something bad. Many times it’s something great. It’s just new to you.
The unknown can be a scary place. Stepping into a new venture, a bigger goal, or a new business is all scary. You’ve never done it before.
That scary place at the edge of your comfort zone, as you’re about to do something new, bigger, and greater than you have ever done before, is an amazing place to be standing. It means you want more, you’re not going to settle for okay, average, or good enough. You want greatness, excellence, and mastery of your life and business. Mastering takes time, and learning to love the edge of your comfort zone.
The Benefit of Experiencing Fear
Experience the fear. Allow it to be there, but also know there is excitement in moving into the unknown. You’re embarking on something amazing. You’re growing, and no matter the outcome, there will be a gift in the end. We don’t always get it upfront, but sooner or later you see it.
The fear that you experience at the edge of your comfort zone can also cause what I like to call the “Brat” to show up. The self-talk that likes to keep you safe and small. That can cause you to go into the “Spin”. The spin where your Brat shows up, telling you all the reasons why the thing you’re about to do is such a bad idea, why you can’t do it, and paints a picture of a fictional disaster up ahead.
Turning Your Fear Into Your Ally
You can stop the Spin, and make your Fear your Ally following these simple steps:
- Acknowledge your fear when it comes up. It’s a good thing. You’re about to grow, step into something new, and take a step into your potential.
- Thank the fear and the “Brat” for sharing, and let yourself know that it’s okay. You are safe. You have many more skills then you did when you were younger.
- Stay in appreciation. If the fear starts that “Spin” and you go into self-doubt, judgment, or your story of why you can’t do what you want to do … then start to appreciate even the smallest things around you. Nothing stops the “Spin” faster than to be in appreciation.
- Ask yourself what is the most important step I can take right now. Stay focused, and just keep taking one step after another.
- Play! Have fun; enjoy the excitement of doing something new, even if it is a bit scary. Dare to scare yourself, but be able to laugh along the way. Stay in curiosity and be willing to be great, successful, and most of all, be willing to sit at the edge of your comfort zone.
