Do you find yourself resisting an important activity in your business? Important activities done on a consistent basis could really have a huge impact on your business success. You ask yourself, why can’t I just get this done? Or, why am I avoiding doing this activity?
Even though you ask yourself these questions, you just can’t get yourself to move forward. You feel blocked and can’t find a way through it.
This can be a very frustrating place to sit in your business. A place that I have sat in several times. The good news is, you are not alone, and resistance usually precedes a huge shift or breakthrough in your business, if you are willing to do the work.
What Resistance Means
When resistance sets in, there is usually a skill that needs to be learned or improved upon or you have a subconscious pattern that is rearing its head. Many times, it’s a combination of both.
I also know, it is really frustrating because it’s so hard to see it for yourself. This is because it is usually sitting in your blind spot. If you put your hand right behind your ear, can you see it? Nope, but you know it’s there. That’s how these subconscious patterns work. You can’t see them, but you know something is going on.
What’s crazy is research shows that most of these patterns develop between the ages of 3 and 10. As children, we don’t have the ability to process a lot of emotion. When there is an emotional event that happens, it can be serious or just feel very emotional. As a child, you can process some of the emotion, but some of the emotion gets stuck in the body.
What Triggers Resistance
As a result, every time you find yourself in a situation that feels similar, it triggers the blocked energy and reinforces a decision that is made around that event, and a pattern of behavior begins. This usually serves you really well as a child, but at some point, it stops serving you and becomes a pattern that can work against you.
Sometimes, the activity you’re resisting is something you have not developed the skill to perform. If you feel like you just need to learn more about how to become more masterful at the activity, then you’ll want to improve your skill level. Reach out and get the support you need from the people who can help you to increase your skill level. Remember, sometimes you just have to jump into it and suck at it for a little bit. As you keep practicing, you will get better and better.
But, if you have done this or you could do the activity in your sleep, then you probably have a subconscious pattern coming to the surface saying, “Okay, are you ready to clear this one”? At this point, you have two choices. You can stuff it or you can take a look at it and do the work, which in most cases is a whole lot less painful in the long run then stuffing it.
Uncovering and transforming subconscious patterns is one of the things I love doing and can intuitively sense and pull out. When I work with my clients on this, one of the most important aspects to this is awareness…bringing the subconscious to the conscious.
If you find yourself stuck or blocked and feel like it’s more than just skill level, here are a few steps to begin with in creating some awareness around your resistance:
- Pay attention. Keep a judgment free awareness around when the resistance pops up. If you planned on sitting down and making follow-up calls for 30 minutes and then find yourself doing the dishes, filing papers, or getting unbelievably tired all of sudden (this is mine), then just notice.
- Catch it. When you find yourself doing the dishes instead of making calls, or you remember- oh yeah, I was going to make those calls and totally forgot – take a second to check in. Visualize yourself doing the activity that you resisted, and scan your body for any physical sensations. Where do you feel the blocked energy in the body? This may take a few times as many of us have become so unattached from our bodies.
- Allow it. Once you have uncovered where you hold the energy in the body (it usually shows up in one of the 7 main energy centers). take 30 seconds to a minute, and just feel into it. Allow it to be there, free from judgment. This can be a little uncomfortable and bring up emotion. By sitting with it and just allowing it, this helps to process out some of the blocked energy. Whatever comes up is okay. Just love yourself through it.
When you pay attention, catch when you’re in resistance, feel it in your body, allow it, and be with it for just a few seconds, you will find you can move forward with the resisted activity with a little more freedom.
Remember, nothing is wrong with you! Some patterns and habits just need an upgrade.
