You may be asking yourself what is Radical Self-Care, and why is it essential? It’s essential because without it, you will not have the energy and vitality to nurture and care for the people in your life you want to take care of, build the business you want to build, and have the impact you want to have.
Yes, you can sustain trying to do it all for a while, and you may have been doing it for a long while. But, this is not sustainable over the long haul. Keeping up a doing-it-all pace without Radical Self-Care will leave you exhausted, burned out, frustrated, resentful, and short tempered.
When you get to this point, who gets the brunt of it? You guessed it, your family and the people closest to you. Which stinks because these are the most important people to you and the ones you want to give your best.
Let’s give you some context. Self-Care is essential and tangible. It’s taking care of the body; eating right, exercising, receiving massages, and anything else you do to take care of the beautiful vessel you have been given.
Radical Self-Care feeds the Soul. It gives you energy, fills you up, and fulfills you. Radical Self-Care is where you bring joyful play into your life. It’s completely unique to you, and there is no right or wrong about it. It’s the visceral feeling you receive from joyful play.
The sticky part is finding what joyful play means to you. This is a journey that you navigate. It grows and evolves as you grow and evolve. Along the journey, it gets sticky, and it will be messy. This is because as you grow up, add on more responsibility, build a business or career, take care of a family, you can forget how to play, and joyful play has completely disappeared.
I know this, because I have been on the journey for the last 20 years and supported many through it.
Think about it, when was the last time you experienced joyful play?
The type of play you feel from the inside out. Rising in your body and filling you up with energy and a sense of fulfillment. If it’s been a while or you can’t even remember, then take a moment and look where YOU fall amidst your priority list.
I’m going to suggest that you place yourself at the top. Bringing self-care and Radical Self-Care as a top priority for you. Embark on the journey of what is joyful play to you and end the doing it all, so you can have it all.
Because this journey can become sticky and a bit messy, I want to invite you to bring curiosity along with you. Curiosity automatically brings in a sense of play. (And here’s a secret: Curiosity is where the magic is).
Radical Self-Care starts with bringing joyful play into your life. Here are a few tips as you begin your journey. Don’t forget to bring curiosity along with you as you go through these questions.
1. Spend some time with finding out what play means to you. What is the definition of play, and how do you think it “should be”?
2. What is joy to you? How does it feel? What brings you joy?
3. Once you have spent some time with questions 1 and 2, then I want you to challenge your answers.
a. Are they true?
b. Have you adopted an idea of what play or joy should be that doesn’t really resonate for you?
c. Are there things you like to do that bring you joy that you don’t think qualify?
4. Remember, what you find joyful play to be is unique to you. What one-person thinks is joyful play may not be the same for you. That is ok. My sister loves taking baths. It brings her joy, relaxation, and fills her up. I sit in a tub and think “what now”. It actually stresses me out.
5. If this is a little hard for you, take a pause. Joy can be found in holding a hot cup of tea, sitting on your back porch and taking a moment for you. You don’t have to be in the doing of things to find joy. Sometimes, it’s in the pause.
This is one of the most important journeys you will be on. Although the journey can be sticky and messy, I promise on the other side you will find your rhythm. You’ll find yourself more rested, energized, and thriving. You’ll be doing less but achieving more. You’ll have the time for the things that are most important to you.
But most of all, you’ll have the energy and vitality to take care of and nurture those you love and want to connect with, build the business you want to build, and have the impact you want to have!
